Beyond The Pale

The picture is of a fence at the side of sand dunes at Bantham Beach, Devon but the title has nothing to do with buckets :)

An old word for fence was based on the word "pale", meaning pointed wooden sticks (think "impale"). These fences marked the (defensive) boundary of a village or group of houses, so being "beyond the pale" meant you were beyond the safe area and you'd better watch out!
