Sitting in Plymouth Sound, Drake's Island provides a commanding view of the approach to the Devon coast. Now in private hands it was part of the Napoleonic fortifications and defenses of one of the UK's most important naval ports. In this view, the golden rays of the setting sun give Drakes Island a final bathing in warmth before the night starts to set in. A single fisherman is trying his luck in a rowing boat, no doubt enjoying the peace and tempoprary isolation.
